Steelers Could Tag Le'Veon Bell At QB Number In 2019

  • What Should Steelers Do With Le'Veon Bell If He Returns

Le'Veon Bell has not had contact with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, sources tell ESPN, and barring an unforeseen development in the next few days, is not expected to report to the team in time for Thursday night's game against the Panthers, increasing the possibility that the star running back will not play at all this season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back is considering holding out for the duration of the season, instead of returning by the November 13 deadline as many suspect he will, because he stands to benefit a clause in the NFL's collective-bargaining agreement with players that recently caught his representatives' attention, The Athletic's Mark Kaboly reported Tuesday, citing a source.

The Athletic reported a month ago that Bell would qualify as a third franchise tag even if he didn't show by the deadline. According to NFL.com's Tom Pelissero that salary would be more than $25 million next season. He can become a free agent in 2019 if the Steelers do not place a third tag on him. Either option would allow Bell to seek a deal from another team which is what he has been seeking all along. But Bell would still be free to test the market under the transition tag, and even if the Steelers matched any external offers, he'd still get the long-term deal he's wanted all along.

The Caribbean batting faltered in their chase after losing their openers in Shai Hope, for six, and Shimron Hetmyer, for 15, early.

The Steelers could use the transition tag on him, which would be worth less than the exclusive franchise tag they used this season.

Bell has been working out in Miami this season, but on Monday he tweeted "Fairwell Miami" without further explanation. Without Bell, the Steelers have started their 2018 season 5-2-1 as replacement running back James Connor has racked up 706 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, which are both the second-highest totals in the league.
