Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its new Tarok concept at the São Paulo International Motor Show, with the show vehicle previewing a fresh-faced baby double-cab bakkie set to be positioned just below the Amarok.
The Wolfsburg-based brand says the unibody concept features a "large variable loading area", which can be extended thanks to a folding rear panel.
The series version of the Tarok Concept will soon be launched on the Brazilian market, with barely any changes.
Said to be able to haul up to one tonne, the Tarok's tray can accommodate extra-long items if both the tailgate and rear bulkhead door are folded down. Beyond this crafty convenience feature, Tarok is graded as a proper South African class full-size bakkie, with a 1000kg payload capacity. This year's show doesn't disappoint, as Volkswagen debuts the clever, little Tarok Concept. Other exterior styling elements include a front end inspired by the Atlas Tanoak, sunroof, LED lighting, roof bar and sculpted sides.
While there is no news of the Volkswagen Tarok making it our shores, we think it could be VW's contender in the steadily growing lifestyle pickup segment in India that's now dominated by the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross.
Inside, you'll find a colour-coded crossbar in Cypress Metallic that stretches across the entire facia and surrounds a glass-covered infotainment system, digital air-conditioning controls and digital cockpit.
The Tarok Concept is powered by a 1.4-litre 110 kW / 150 PS four-cylinder TSI engine, which can be driven in Brazil as a TotalFlex Fuel Unit both with pure ethanol (E100) as well as a gasoline-ethanol blend (E22). The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic, and the ride has permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive. Volkswagen says that the Tarok-based production truck will base with a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel TDI with the same horsepower.
