Texas has elected its first Hispanic woman to Congress, with Democrats Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia winning their house seats.

Once you add those to the handful of women Senators and Governors who did not have to face the electorate in these midterms (as only some positions were contested), the proportion of women now in power goes up to around 22 per cent.

Sharice Davids of Kansas and Deb Haaland of New Mexico won their races, becoming the first Native American women in Congress. Davids racked up another distinction as the first openly LGBTQ person to represent Kansas. Others, like Massachusetts' Ayanna Pressley, were political veterans.

If more than 84 of those women candidates won on Tuesday, it would set a record for the number of women serving in the House.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI became the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Sharice Davids defeated a Republican incumbent in Kansas to become the first openly LGBTQ woman to represent Kansas. Several were first-time candidates. Research shows that women are more likely to raise policies related to women's health and family than men.

Also in the House, Democrats Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI will be the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. It will also feature the first Native American women, the first Muslim women and the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn defeated the state's former Governor, Democrat Phil Bredesen. The win was momentous for a number of reasons, not just that Democrats can now challenge Trump and the Republican party agenda.

Though a few months older than Ocasio-Cortez, Abby Finkenauer of Iowa, along with fellow candidate Cindy Axne, won a different distinction as the first women Iowa has ever sent to the House. Wallace also suggested Ingraham was being hypocritical, saying that if she gives Republicans credit for keeping the Senate, she must also give the Democrats credit for flipping the House.

Another important trend from this year's exits (and any year's) is how gender interacts with race and education.

On Tuesday night Democrats won control of the House, delivering a major blow to Trump in the first election since he became president in 2016.
