Trump considering Christie, Bondi for attorney general

  • US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, said he was resigning at the request of US President Donald Trump on Nov 7 2018

As Mueller has got closer to the heart of the Trump family's closely guarded financial secrets, the president has become more enraged. The committee under the Republicans had found no evidence of collusion in April this year.

"And to outsiders, it looks like he [Trump] chose this person because this person has committed to end this investigation, this person is loyal to Donald Trump".

John F. Kelly, the White House chief of staff, called Sessions before his postelection news conference Wednesday to tell the attorney-general that Trump wanted him to step down, the administration official said.

Trump said he will nominate a permanent successor for Sessions at a later date. He also tweeted a link describing the probe as a "witch hunt".

High-ranking Democrats reacted with alarm, calling for Mr Whitaker to recuse himself from the investigation.

Said Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer: "Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Mr Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting Attorney-General".

A personal connection to a Mueller witness is unlikely to sway Whitaker or the White House when it comes to recusal, as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein supervised the probe despite being a witness himself.

Several Republicans expressed concern about Whitaker taking over the Russian Federation probe.

"I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced with a recess appointment".

In July 2017, he said during an interview on CNN that he could envision a scenario under which a temporary attorney general doesn't fire Mueller but rather "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigations grinds to nearly a halt".

The counselor to the president went on to give credit to Sessions for his work at the Department of Justice, including cracking down on opioid abuse as well as the MS-13 gang.

In piercing attacks, Trump called Sessions weak and beleaguered, complained that he wasn't more aggressively pursuing allegations of corruption against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and called it "disgraceful" that Sessions wasn't more serious in scrutinizing the origins of the Russian Federation investigation for possible law enforcement bias - even though the attorney general did ask the Justice Department's inspector general to examine those claims.

"This must begin immediately, and if not, then a Democratic Congress will make this a priority in January", Jerry Nadler warned.

Congressional Democrats, concerned about protecting Mueller, called on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation in its final but potentially explosive stages. "They must act now, for the sake of our nation".
