  • Khashoggi a critic of Saudi policy was killed in the country’s Istanbul consulate on October 2

Saudi prosecutors have requested the death penalty for five of the accused, whom they say ordered and supervised Khashoggi's murder at the consulate, Al-Arabiya reported.

He added that Saud al-Qahtani, a former advisor to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is also under investigation and barred from traveling overseas.

At a press conference held in capital Riyadh, Saud al-Mujeb said that Khashoggi died due to high dose of drugs given by his murderers, his body was dismembered after and transferred outside the consulate compound.

Al-Mojeb told reporters in Riyadh that the highest-level official implicated in Khashoggi's killing is former deputy intelligence chief Ahmad al-Assiri, who gave the order for him to be repatriated from Turkey.

The announcement by the kingdom's top prosecutor, Saud al-Mojeb, appears aimed at distancing the killers and their operation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whose decision-making powers have been the focus of global outcry over the killing.

He added that Jamal Khashoggi's body was dismembered and then transferred outside the Saudi consulate building.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shalaan bin Rajih Shalaan later denied Salman was aware of the killing, saying investigations "revealed that the person who ordered the killing was the head of the negotiations team" and MBS "did not have any knowledge about it".

After first insisting Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, Saudi authorities said he was killed in an argument that degenerated into a brawl before finally accepting what Turkey had said virtually from the start - that he was killed in a premeditated hit.
