  • Changes to Bunnings Warehouse sausage sizzle called 'un-Australian' for a safety overhaul

"This will ruin Australia", remarked a news anchor on The Today Show.

It "Threatens to Tear Nation Apart", read a headline on a popular news site.

Bunnings Warehouse, a national chain of almost 300 stores, may not have expected it, but the effort to dispense culinary advice as if it were home fix led to a countrywide meltdown.

He delicately weighed into the fray.

It's the debate that has been sizzling Down Under for days, but at the Asean summit in Singapore new Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison refused to take sides on the hot topic of whether onions should be served on top or under a sausage.

"This recommendation is provided to the community groups within their fundraising sausage sizzle welcome pack and is on display within the gazebos when barbecues are underway", Ms Poole said.

"For those mocking Bunnings for this decision, you do realise that it would have been some lazy customer who dropped onion on the floor and didn't pick it up, therefore causing another customer to slip and carry on / complain about it", wrote one commenter.

"To make sure that onions don't end up on the ground and pose a slipping risk, please apply a small amount of onion to the bread under the sausage when serving".

The move has outraged many Aussies, with some calling the changes to the quintessential weekend snack as "un-Australian". For many, the guidance was nothing short of an attack on their personal freedom.

"This is your turn to look them in the eye and say, 'Onion bike!'"

"To be frank, our customers know onions are for eating not dropping". But, I'm sorry, you've got this one wrong.

Magee said his restaurant placed onions beneath a sausage upon request only - usually from customers with beards who wanted to minimize mess.

The Nova star penned an open letter to the hardware chain urging it to abolish it's policy to serve onions below the snag rather than on top of it.

Bunnings did its best to respond seriously to the barrage.

The alarming new procedure was confirmed on radio station 3AW yesterday - with Bunnings' chief operating officer, Debbie Poole, explaining that "safety is always our No 1 priority".

It's all due to new Occupational Health and Safety rules, with fears a stray caramelised onion may find it easier to abscond from the top of a sausage than beneath it, leading to fears of major customer slippage.

The company denied that the guidance was really a marketing ploy meant to go viral.
