Judge rules on requests by Abrams campaign

Democrat Stacey Abrams has acknowledged that Republican Brian Kemp will be declared the next governor of Georgia, bringing to a close the hard-fought and bitterly contested election.

"Under the watch of the now former secretary of state, democracy failed Georgia", Abrams said of Kemp, who served as the state's chief elections officer for almost a decade before resigning after overseeing his own contest. "But to watch an elected official who claims to represent the people in the state baldly pin his hopes for election on suppression of people's democratic right to vote has been truly appalling". Since Election Day her campaign fought on, insisting efforts to suppress turnout had left thousands of ballots uncounted that otherwise could erode Kemp's lead and force a runoff election. Three-quarters of all counties had completed that count. On Thursday, when the first round of the statewide recount was conducted, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum did not gain enough additional votes to move to round two.

Ballots are still being counted, and Abrams is battling to force the governor's race with Republican opponent Brian Kemp into a run-off. And the numbers could change again as federal courts issue new guidance on counting certain provisional and absentee ballots.

Clinton closed her speech with a snide remark about the size of Donald Trump's inauguration crowd - a fitting end to a speech about not being able to accept the results of a full and fair election with dignity. As a result, they not only received more than 10,000 phone calls, but collected those voters' information and accounts to include in their lawsuits.

But Abrams had vowed to press on for almost two weeks, with her campaign framing it as a much bigger fight for voting rights, especially among minority voters.

The issue of race loomed large over the campaign in its final weeks, however.

The result of the Nelson-Scott race will not change the balance of power in the Senate, where Republicans extended their lead in the November 6 midterm vote, while Democrats took a majority in the House of Representatives.

But with a 5 p.m. Friday deadline for all of Georgia's counties to certify their election results, a path for Abrams was looking slim.

The election took place on November 6th and Kemp has even declared himself the victor, but the Abrams campaign and several other organizations have raised issues (and brought lawsuits) concerning strict policies Kemp enforced that prevented people from casting a traditional ballot if their named differed in any way from the name on the voter roll.

Kemp denies any attempts at voter suppression.

Despite all the fiery rhetoric, Stacey Abrams conceded because she lost the election. She received more than 1.9 million votes - more than Barack Obama got in Georgia during either of his campaigns for the presidency.

He declined to extend the period during which evidence could be submitted to prove the eligibility of voters who cast provisional ballots.

Abrams made the comments in a Friday speech, shortly after she said she can't win the race, effectively ending her challenge to Republican Brian Kemp.

The legitimacy of Kemp's victory will shadow his administration, along with scrutiny of the laws and administrative rules that disenfranchised Georgia voters. In contrast, some of the country's best voting systems-which could have quickly resolved questions about the reasons for Broward County's 31,000 Senate race under-votes-were not used.
