Earth, of course, is always traveling around the sun, and sometimes we collide with these trails of comet debris. To the earth's orbit, it comes close every 33 years. In 1833, according to Baker, viewers saw an incredible 100,000 meteors per hour. Beforehand, check out to see when the Leonids will be visible in your area.

So, to see the meteors can be anywhere in the Land, however, it is important to provide a minimum stray light. It is not predicted that we will get a "meteor storm" this year, but this shower has surprised us in the past - with some fireballs! For the best show, observers should head as far from the city as possible - artificial lights drown out fainter meteors and render the brighter ones less impressive.

"As all of these meteors can be traced back to a point of origin in the sky that's inside the constellation Leo, this is called the Leonid meteor shower", says The Weather Network's Scott Sutherland. While the meteors radiate from the the constellation Leo, you don't need to look in its direction to see the meteors; simply look up! Although this year's shower won't be as vast, experts estimate that people will see up to 20 meteors per hour - a little more than the average of 10 to 15 meteors usually seen per hour during the Leonids. Under rural skies, people with good eyesight should see an average of 15 to 20 meteors per hour.

One account from the 1966 Leonid storm described seeing "dozens of meteors every second. the effect was similar to watching snowflakes race at your windshield while driving in a snowstorm". The less light pollution there is over you, the better for viewing! If you find yourself up early, bundle up and look up! If you want to photograph the Leonid meteor shower, NASA suggests using a camera with manual focus on a tripod with a shutter release cable or built-in timer, fitted with a wide-angle lens.
