  • Instagram is cracking down on fake likes, follows and comments

If you've logged in on Instagram today and wondered why your follower count dropped, then know that you're not alone. Many accounts aiming to gain paid relationships with brands to deliver sponsored posts will use third-party apps to ramp up fake likes, follows and comments so that they can position themselves as an influencer. "It is our responsibility to ensure these experiences aren't disrupted by inauthentic activity".

The app built a tool that will help identify these types of accounts.

"Starting today, we will begin removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity", Instagram said in a statement.

The app also stated in their blog that while it's "introduc [ing] bad behavior into the Instagram community", it's also making their accounts less secure.

It's possible that some people may have inadvertently shared their credentials with third-party apps, hence why offending accounts aren't automatically being deleted.

"It looks like you may have shared your username and password with an app offering followers or likes", the alert states.

Facebook at large, of course, has been hampered by a slew of bad news lately, with the company's ham-fisted response to inauthentic activity across its family of apps increasingly coming under scrutiny.

Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook obviously attract a ton of people, and when you have platforms as massive as these are, some have the temptation to artificially inflate things such as likes and follows to increase their popularity. Basically, if Instagram prompts you to change your password, you should listen to it.

Those who knowingly continue to use this app will find their "Instagram experience impacted".

Instagram is borrowing a page from Twitter's playbook and will now be more proactive with regard to limiting what it calls inauthentic activity.
