The DUP just stopped supporting Theresa May in parliament

In a message to those plotting her downfall, including members of the European Research Group (ERG) of Eurosceptic MPs, Mrs May warned that a change of leadership at this point wasn't going to make the negotiations any easier, and it wasn't going to change the parliamentary arithmetic.

Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party struck a deal a year ago to back May's Conservatives on major legislation.

May vowed to fight on and has repeatedly cautioned her critics that if they topple her, the United Kingdom will be thrust into a potentially disorderly departure from the European Union on March 29 or that Brexit could be put off or canceled.

"We had to do something to show our displeasure", the DUP's Brexit spokesman, Sammy Wilson, said.

The EU is due to hold a summit to discuss the draft deal on November 25.

"I expect us to hammer out the full and final details of the framework that will underpin our future relationship".

The event comes just as her future as prime minister and the state of Brexit are both up in the air.

In an ominous move for the Prime Minister's Brexit plans, the Northern Ireland party also refused to support the Government on a string of other measures in the Finance Bill.

Tonight the DUP broke the agreement signed in June 2017 which promised: "The DUP agrees to support the government on all motions of confidence; and on the Queen's Speech; the Budget; finance bills; money bills, supply and appropriation legislation and Estimates".

Commenting after the debate, she said: "I am very concerned about this proposed deal for many reasons - including what this deal will mean for our friends, neighbours and co-workers who come from the EU27 and have made Oxford their home".

Many business chiefs and investors fear politics could torpedo an agreement, thrusting the economy into a no-deal void that they say would weaken the West, spook financial markets and silt up the arteries of trade.

Brexit secretary Dominic Raab resigned in protest against the deal last Thursday and the rightwing of May's Conservative Party has been calling for her to resign and threatening an internal leadership challenge. She needs 320 votes out of the 650-seat parliament to get approval. At present the Brexit agreement treats Northern Ireland separately to the rest of Britain, and in their view risks a break up of the United Kingdom.

The no-confidence vote may be announced by the backbench 1922 Committee of the UK Parliament's House of Commons, which should receive 48 letters in favour of the motion from Conservative lawmakers.

Since she won the top job in the turbulence that followed the 2016 Brexit referendum, May's premiership has been characterized by obduracy in the face of frequent crises.
