  • Another Indian gets top tech job, to head Google’s Cloud business

Diane Greene, CEO of Google Cloud, announced Friday that she will be leaving her post in early 2019-a specific date was not mentioned. In a blog post, Greene said she will be succeeded by former Oracle product head Thomas Kurian, who will be joining Google on 26 November. Greene will remain a board director at Google's parent company, Alphabet.

Greene said she originally meant to stay at Google for just two years, and now the executive is ready to focus on her passions, which include mentoring and education.

Greene stated that she will be turning her attentions to mentoring female founder CEOs and educational philanthropy. The cloud space is early and there is an enormous opportunity ahead.

Cloud is an ever-growing business, and Google clearly sees that having a pro at the helm will help its ambitions, especially in a market like India, where the internet proliferation and access to enterprise business, as well as consumers is slowly moving to the cloud.

Where it used to report two cloud revenue segments - Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) as one and then a combined figure for Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) as another, smaller, figure - now it is reporting just one figure: cloud services and licence support.

Kurian spent 22 years at Oracle, where he grew into a powerful acolyte of Executive Chairman Larry Ellison.

Thomas Kurian was born in India in the 1960s and moved to the USA in 1986 to attend Princeton University with his twin brother George, who is now the CEO of Silicon Valley storage company NetApp.

This lacking market share has been contributed to Green's focus on equipping Cloud customers with the advanced AI and machine learning capabilities powering Google's other services. It's a fast-growing business unit for Google, but a year ago, Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of technical infrastructure at Google, speaking at Structure 2017, said Microsoft's marketing efforts are better. Most recently, Kurian served as president of product development for Oracle. Kurian had a hard time transitioning the company to cloud computing.

Kurian stepped down from Oracle in September.

"Enterprise customers need a different level of care, and Google hasn't been able to deliver to date. We revamped customer engineering and added a team of experts in the Office of the CTO", she wrote.

"Like Diane Greene, Kurian has serious enterprise chops", Koenig said.

Steve Koenig, a financial analyst following Oracle for Wedbush Securities, said Kurian is better positioned at Google to drive business sales growth than at his former employer.
