  • Doctors hold a baby girl born to a mother who received a uterus from a deceased donor in Brazil. A novel transplantation procedure may help more infertile women become pregnant

This isn't the first baby born to a woman with a uterine transplant-several have been born in Sweden, the us, and Brazil to women who received uterine transplants from live donors.

The uterus was taken from a 45-year-old donor who had died from a brain haemorrhage.

The baby girl was delivered via C-section last December weighing 6lbs. Deceased donor uterus transplants have been attempted in the past few years, but none resulted in the birth of a healthy baby.

Ten previous attempts using deceased donors in the Czech Republic, Turkey and the U.S. have failed.

"The increase in the number of centers performing this transplant, standardization of the surgical technique and immunosuppressive therapy can facilitate access to this new modality of treatment", he says.

Until recently, the only options available to women with so-called uterine infertility were adoption or the services of a surrogate mother.

Details of the first case were published Tuesday in the medical journal Lancet. The first successful uterine transplant (from a living donor) took place in 2013 in Sweden, and the woman who received the transplant gave birth in 2014.

The whole field of uterus transplantation is in its early days.

Researchers in Turkey performed a uterine transplant in 2011 from a deceased donor but have not had any successful pregnancies.

The woman, a 32-year-old psychologist, was initially apprehensive about the transplant, said Dr Dani Ejzenberg, the transplant team's lead doctor at the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine.

It was then transplanted to the woman who was given medication to weaken her immune system so her body would not reject the uterus.

"One will never be able to find whether the dead woman has had any infections in the uterus, nor in the vaginal canals and whether it is treatable or not", Ms Rao told IANS. Seven months after the transplant, doctors transferred an embryo made via in-vitro fertilization from the woman's egg and her husband's sperm into her womb.

After five months, the uterus showed no sign of rejection, ultrasound scans were normal, and the woman was menstruating regularly.

"The numbers of people willing and committed to donate organs upon their own deaths are far larger than those of live donors, offering a much wider potential donor population", said Dr Ejzenberg in a statement about the procedure.

At seven months and 20 days - when the case study report was submitted to The Lancet - the baby girl was continuing to breastfeed and weighed 7.2kg. "Now she comes in to show us the baby and she is so happy", he said. But they said that relying on deceased donors could expand the options for women who do not have a friend or family member willing to donate or that would be a good match.

The donor uterus was removed during delivery, Ejzenberg says, since the team's study involved only one birth per mother.

Although uterus transplants are a growing area of medicine, they remain highly experimental and are very hard surgeries to complete.

Richard Kennedy, president of the International Federation of Fertility Societies, also welcomed the announcement but sounded a note of caution.
