  • United Nations chief Guterres calls for more action to tackle climate change

Speaking directly to the leaders of the world, at what is being described as the most important climate change meeting since the 2015 Paris agreement, the English broadcaster said action must be taken before it is too late.

Last week, 20 leaders responsible for 85 percent of the world's economy and two-thirds of the population gathered at the G-20 Summit in Buenos Aires.

He was speaking at the opening of a United Nations climate change conference in Poland on Monday, where delegates from across the world will negotiate how to tackle the issue.

"The world's people have spoken", Attenborough told the crowd, which included leaders and diplomats from around the world.

Net zero emissions mean any greenhouse gases emitted need to be soaked up by forest or new technologies that can remove carbon from the atmosphere. To have any hope of reaching the 1.5 degree Celsius goal by the end of the century, the United Nations said emissions from fossil fuel use must be halved by 2030.

"We have a collective responsibility to invest in averting global climate chaos", he said.

The controversial tax is part of French President Emmanuel Macron's larger plan to reduce France's reliance on fossil fuels, in order to cut greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change.

The remark was directed at host Poland, which relies on coal for 80 per cent of its energy.

"Right now, we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale".

The second-biggest deal by value in the consumer goods space is that of Diageo picking up majority stake in United Spirits. It also includes acquisition of certain other commercial operations and assets outside India , it added.

The conference, attended by 30,000 delegates from 196 countries including Ireland, is being held in Katowice, in the heart of Poland's coal-mining region. Scientists say the deal's most ambitious goal - limiting the rise to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 C) - is still feasible, but increasingly challenging.

If you're shaking your head that President Trump still isn't on board with the accord, know that the U.S.at least agreed to sign on to a measure to support clean energy initiatives that reads, "We recognize the crucial role of energy in helping shape our shared future, and we encourage energy transitions that combine growth with decreasing greenhouse gas emissions toward cleaner, more flexible and transparent systems, and cooperation in energy efficiency".

Schwarzenegger said he wished he could travel back in time, like the cyborg he played in his film The Terminator, so he could stop fossil fuels from being used.

The background to Monday's summit could hardly be bleaker: with just one Celsius of warming so far Earth is bombarded with raging wildfires, widespread crop failures and super-storms exacerbated by rising sea levels.

Most notably, American president Donald Trump has shown a complete disregard of any sustainable climate goals, announcing his intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, and implementing policies that favor the fossil fuel industry at the expense of greener tech.

The 92-year-old took to the stage in Poland on Monday claiming climate change can no longer be ignored and that time is running out to save the world and its people.

Climate Action Minister Richard Bruton, who is in Poland for the talks, said he fully endorsed UN Secretary-General António Guterres's comments about the need to take action.

Delegates from almost 200 countries now have two weeks of negotiations to finalize how those goals work in practice, even as science suggests the pace of climate change is rapidly outstripping mankind's response.
