  • Huawei CFO arrested in Canada for reportedly violating United States sanctions against Iran

Canadian authorities in Vancouver have arrested Huawei Technologies Co.'s chief financial officer at the request of the USA government for alleged violations of Iranian sanctions, the latest move by Washington to crack down on the Chinese cellular-technology giant.

Huawei issued a statement saying Meng was changing flights in Canada when she was detained "on behalf of the United States of America" to face "unspecified charges" in NY. The ban was sought by Meng, who has a bail hearing Friday.

Earlier this year, Reuters news agency reported that US prosecutors in NY were investigating whether Huawei violated American sanctions against Iran by shipping American-origin products to Iran in violation of USA export and sanctions laws.

Meng, the 46-year-old daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, has previously been suspected of involvement in Huawei's alleged ties to Iran.

Officials for the US Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Reuters reported in 2013 that Ms. Meng served on the board of a Hong Kong-based Skycom Tech Co.

The statement said that Meng was taken into custody when she was transferring flights in Canada.

The statement, which said it was to be attributed to Huawei headquarters, added that Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, US and European Union.

In a statement, Huawei said it complied with "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU".

The US imposed harsher sanctions on Iran earlier this year, as the Trump administration looked to restrict global business with the Iranian government.

Huawei, among the world's largest telecommunications equipment makers, has previously stated it abides by "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including the applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and European Union".

In August, U.S. president Donald Trump signed an act to ban the use of Huawei components or services that are "essential" or "critical" to the systems they are used.

For the same reason, Australia's government blocked China's telecom giant Huawei from its 5G mobile network last summer.

In a brief announcement released today, Canada's Department of Justice has announced that it has arrested the Chief Financial Officer of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou.

The report said existing Huawei equipment at the firm's current 3G and 4G networks would also be removed.

This November, New Zealand's government banned its major telecommunications company Spark from using Huawei's equipment, which is described to "have a serious national security risk".
