Fares will be lifted next summer under the recently re-elected coalition government led by Xavier Bettel.

The coalition government, which comprises Bettel's centrist Democratic party, the left-wing Socialist Workers' Party and the Greens, had campaigned on a promise of increased environmental protection and improved public services.

Apart from providing free public transport, Bettel's coalition government also intends to legalise cannabis and introduce two new public holidays.

Grand Duchy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel introduced the plan yesterday, December 5, when he took office for his second term, as reported by The Guardian on the same day.

Some places around the world offer free transport in a bid to reduce traffic congestion, and in some United States counties the bus system is free, but no other nation has eliminated fares from its entire transport network.

According to The Independent, Luxembourg's transport system costs close to €1bn per year to operate, but as a result of the concessionary offers, fares amount to only €30m annually. A recent study cited by The Guardian showed that drivers in the capital spent an average of 33 hours in traffic snarl-ups in 2016.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Claps Back At Mike Huckabee

With a population of 600,000 inhabitants, Luxembourg also proves to be the workplace of 200,00 people from France, Belgium and Germany who cross the border daily to work.

Currently, commuters pay just £1.78 for two hours of travel - but even this low fare will be scrapped under the plan.

Children and young people under the age of 20 already ride free on public buses, trams and trains in Luxembourg, thanks to a policy change introduced by Bettel's government earlier this year.

Now, from the start of 2020 all tickets will be abolished, saving on the collection of fares and the policing of ticket purchases.

The government, however, has yet to divulge their plans for the first- and second-class compartments on trains.
