Commenting on the announcement, Deborah Gold, chief executive of National Aids Trust, said: "Although no one is obliged to be open about their status, and it isn't always an easy decision, the same stigma that makes it hard to say you have HIV is a stigma that is gradually eroded by people being open and proud".

Significant progress has been made in the AIDS response since 1988, and today three in four people living with HIV know their status.

He said stigma and discrimination are still holding people back, especially key populations - including gay men and other men who have sex with men, sex workers, transgenders, people who inject drugs, prisoners and migrants - and young women and adolescent girls.

"These men's HIV statuses were entirely avoidable".

He told the Press Association that there were "low level elements of stigma [surrounding HIV] in every day life".

Guterres said yet the pace of progress is not matching global ambition.

In Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia, Index Case Testing is used a method to target the people living with HIV who are not aware they have the virus.

Minister Aamer Mehmood Kiani said that Pakistan has an estimated 150,000 people living with HIV while only 25,000 are registered at the 33HIV treatment centres across the country.

"We will also facilitate the integration of vulnerable members of the HIV community into our poverty alleviation and social intervention programmes", he said. HIV testing is on the spotlight as the call for knowing ones HIV status, to take an informed stand, is becoming increasingly necessary to save lives.

"We now have the tools to end HIV transmission here in the United Kingdom - a combination of regular testing, PrEP [pre-exposure prophylaxis medication], condoms and treatment as prevention - and it's vital we continue to ensure people are aware of those tools, know how and are able to access them", said THT chief executive Ian Green. There is a gulf between the modern reality of HIV as an entirely manageable condition and the way people perceive it.

"I think it will go a long way to say that he's very successful, he's a Member of Parliament, he has no issue in terms of representing his constituency as somebody living with HIV".

Rwanda has launched a six-month awareness and prevention campaign aimed at stemming new HIV infections in the country at a ceremony to mark the World AIDS Day.
