President Trump to Nominate William Barr for Attorney General

  • Who Is William Barr?

Trump made the announcement while departing the White House for a trip to Missouri Friday.

In a 2017 opinion piece for the Post, Mr Barr said Mr Trump had been right to fire FBI director James Comey because he "crossed a line" by announcing the outcome of the investigation into Mrs Clinton's emails.

The search for a replacement was escalated after Trump's appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general was beset by controversy and declared by some legal experts as unconstitutional.

This, of course, is no normal time - and it didn't take long for interested parties to scour Mr Barr's recent comments and writings in search of any meaningful hints on how he would oversee Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

President Donald Trump is considering William Barr, who served as US Attorney General for former President George H.W. Bush, to replace Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice. Whitaker, who has not been confirmed by the Senate, drew headlines for his prior criticism of the special counsel investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. In 1977 he received his law degree from George Washington University before working in the Reagan administration as a member of the White House Domestic Policy department.

Mrs Leadsom told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the Government would release the legal advice , but "not without some regret". Now May is trying to get her deal approved by a parliament which shows every sign of striking it down in a vote on December 11.

Barr has said political donations show Mueller's team of professional prosecutors tilt uncomfortably to the left.

Barr is the leading candidate to head the Department of Justice, according to The Washington Post on Thursday.

Those familiar with the discussions said Barr, having already been attorney general, doesn't feel a particular ambition for the position, but does feel a sense of duty to take it if offered. Sessions recused himself from overseeing the investigation. A graduate of Columbia University, where he graduated in 1973 with degrees in government and Chinese studies, Barr worked in the Central Intelligence Agency from 1973 to 1977. Republicans will control the chamber with a 53-47 majority in the new Congress convening in January.

"I think it is quite understandable that the administration would not want an Federal Bureau of Investigation director who did not recognize established limits on his powers", Barr wrote in a Washington Post op-ed in May 2017.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said she was unfamiliar with Barr's views but encouraged by a suggestion that he was an "establishment" Republican. Mr. Trump also announced he is tapping current State Department spokesperson and former Fox News personality Heather Nauert to take the place of Nikki Haley as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
