  • Police have ‘grave fears’ about British woman missing in New Zealand

A week of fading hopes for British backpacker Grace Millane has come to a devastating end with police saying they believe she has been murdered - although no body has been found.

Late this afternoon police announced they were questioning a man about the murder of Grace Millane, 22, who was last seen in Auckland's CBD a week ago.

"Sadly, the evidence we have gathered to this point of the enquiry has established that this is a homicide", Auckland City Police's Detective Inspector Scott Beard said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.

"Grace's family have been advised of this development and are devastated". We are determined to find her...

Millane was on a year-long OE after graduating from the University of Lincoln in September.

Grace Millane's belongings, including a necklace and a Baby-G watch.

David Millane, father of missing British tourist Grace Millane, speaks to the media as police give updates on the investigation.

Her brother, Michael Millane, said the family began getting anxious on Monday when she did not reply to messages.

Meanwhile, the scene examination at the Citylife hotel is continuing as detectives review hundreds of hours of CCTV footage.

Beard said "that property is going to be somewhere, the clothing is going to be somewhere, we haven't found it".

Grace Millane - a 22-year-old woman from Essex, UK - arrived in New Zealand on November 20 as part of a year-long holiday. He also said investigators were looking into her credit card activity to see the last time she made a transaction.

"All I can say is that we know they were together from the time at the Sky City Hotel".

'Finally I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to anybody who has seen, spoken to or come into contact with Grace over the last few days to come forward with any detail no matter how small and contact the investigation team'.

Photos on her Instagram showed she travelled to Cape Reinga with friends before returning to Auckland.

Grace's father today said: "Grace is a lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter". She was traveling alone when visiting New Zealand.

Detective Beard said Millane's case has been tough, at the press conference.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are providing consular support to the family in the United Kingdom, and working with the New Zealand Police in relation to reports of a missing British national in New Zealand".

Anyone with information that could help with the investigation has been asked to contact 0800 676 255.

Millane, the daughter of English property developer David Millane, had not been seen since leaving her hostel in Auckland last Saturday.
