President Donald Trump named State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the ambassador to the United Nations on Friday.

If confirmed, the former Fox News Channel reporter who has little foreign policy experience would replace Nikki Haley, a former SC governor who said she was stepping down at the end of the year.

"I do think what was particularly important to Bolton and to Pompeo was to have someone who was not going to be an independent actor or a power centre all by herself", Benjamin told MEE.

If she gets the job, Nauert would take the post with less clout than Haley, a former SC governor who announced in October that she would step down at the end of this year.

At a State Department briefing on June 5, Nauert was asked about controversial comments that U.S. Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell had recently made., comments which had upset the Germans.

"We guide all of our students to find their passion and set out to achieve their personal and professional goals".

One of the reports came from Fox News, where Ms Nauert has previously worked as a presenter.

Nauert won't face an easy confirmation.

The Washinton Post also quoted former state department official Brett Bruen as saying, "While Haley didn't bring foreign policy experience, she ran a state".

President Trump said she had done "an incredible job".

Nauert had worked for Fox News from 1998 to 2005 before joining ABC.

Ms Nauert's perfectly young looks, good shape and the dazzling smile have long won her a fair bit of fame, even long before the blonde member of the Council of Foreign Relations and proud holder of a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University was readying to enter the White House in the role of State Department spokeswoman.

Nikki Haley has been described as moderate, pragmatic, powerful and fearless - and for two years, the outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations spearheaded some of US President Donald Trump's most nationalistic and controversial policies on the world stage. "Ambassador Haley was a far more high-level figure, particularly early in the administration".

As a New York-based anchor and correspondent at the Fox News Channel, Nauert oversaw breaking news, anchored programs, covered global and domestic crises and interviewed senior elected and military officials.

She has served under two secretaries of state -Rex Tillerson and her current boss Mike Pompeo - and was designated acting under-secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs from March to October 2018.
