  • Reverend Kenneth Bernard Hendricks right looks at documents after being arrested in a church in Naval town in the island province of Biliran central Philippines

Sandoval called the case "both shocking and appalling".

Bureau of Immigration spokeswoman Dana Sandoval says the Rev. Kenneth Bernard Hendricks, who has been indicted in OH for illicit sexual conduct in the Philippines, was arrested Wednesday in a church in Naval town in the island province of Biliran.

The death last week of the Taliban's senior leader in southern Afghanistan in a USA air strike highlights a surge in operations amid pressure to coax the increasingly confident insurgents to accept talks to end the 17-year war.

Bureau of Immigration spokeswoman Dana Sandoval said Thursday that the Rev. Kenneth Bernard Hendricks, who has been indicted in OH for alleged illicit sexual conduct in the Philippines, was arrested in a church in Naval on the island province of Biliran. One victim told agents the priest sexually abused him numerous times, starting in 2012, when he was around 12.

Kenneth Bernard Hendricks, 71, who has been living in Barangay Talustusan in Naval for nearly four decades, was arrested on the strength of a warrant issued by the US District Court of OH last November 30 for sexual abuse complaints.

There was no immediate reaction from the US Embassy, Philippine Catholic Church officials or Hendricks, who was flown to Manila and detained in an immigration detention center.

China says it will carry out tariff cease-fire with US

So far, the authorities have identified 10 victims - including four who came forward at a town hall meeting held in the Philippines. The priest allegedly warned the victims that if they told anyone they would all go to prison. US authorities provided information about the alleged sexual assaults to the Philippine government, she said.

"We will not allow sexual predators to prey on our children."
While details about his work in the Philippines are still being investigated, Glassman said that Hendricks is mentioned as a missionary on the website of the archdiocese of Cincinnati.

The Filipino agency says the USA embassy is "reportedly processing the revocation of Hendricks' passport to help facilitate his immediate deportation". The Archdiocese of Cincinnati issued a statement saying Hendricks is not a local priest.

The church suspended Hendricks from his priestly duties after opening a formal inquiry more than a month ago, said Father John Estina of the Catholic diocese in Biliran, adding that it had cooperated with civil authorities.

"Many people believe that his controversial statements are simply a way of diverting the people's attention from the real issues raised against him", Mr Picardal said.
