  • Intel's new 9th Gen desktop CPUs may have ditched integrated GPUs to take on AMD

In its presentation Intel briefly discussed the likes of 10nm Ice Lake processors, hybrid 10nm Lakefield CPUs, and Project Athena laptops, as well as other non-PC-centric specific stuff like automotive, IoT, sports, AI, networking and 5G, etc.

While specifics have not yet been announced, Intel's Gregory M. Bryant confirmed that the chips will be the first to ship with Gen11 integrated graphics - which Intel claims is "designed to break the 1 TFLOPS barrier", alongside built-in Thunderbolt 3, WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and DL boost (deep learning boost) support. However, that will change with the new Ice Lake processors, as Intel is packing Gen11 integrated graphics solutions. Intel previewed Lakefield, its hybrid 10nm CPU architecture with Foveros 3D packaging. At the CES pre-show, Intel introduced new additions to the 9th Gen Intel Core desktop processor family that expand the options to meet a broad range of consumer needs from casual users to professionals to gamers and serious content creators. This will be the first to use the Foveros packaging technology to integrate the company's mainstream and low-power CPU cores. Intel says the laptops will be ready by the end of this year. And by advanced, Intel means faster processing, increasing battery life, 5G support and everything backed by Artificial intelligence.

The mobile chip range stands out as Intel's first "volume" 10nm PC processor, compared to the predecessor's 14nm manufacturing process.

Intel is expecting the first devices using Project Athena to launch in the second half of 2019, with its innovation partners on the project including Dell, Google, HP, Samsung, Microsoft, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Innolux. This tiny CPU gives OEMs more flexibility for thin and light products. Laptops based on 9th Gen Core processors will hit the market in the second quarter of this year, but no specifications or architecture names were announced.

Last year, Intel unveiled 9th generation core chips, including the Intel Core i9-9900K processor which was touted as the "best gaming processor".

And, in a bid to take on Qualcomm's "Always Connected" Windows 10 PCs, the chipmaker outlined a new standard for the next generation of notebooks called Project Athena.

The NNP-I is a new class of chip dedicated to accelerating inference for companies with high workload demands and is expected to go into production this year.

Lastly, but likely to be seen before the two platforms mentioned above (estimated H2 2019), Intel talked about its Project Athena laptop plans.

Finally, Intel briefly demoed the Snow Ridge network SoC.

Additionally, Intel announced a new 10nm SoC codenamed Snow Ridge specifically for 5G wireless infrastructure equipment such as base stations. Cascade Lake introduces support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory and Intel DL Boost, which is created to accelerate AI deep learning inference.
