Victorian man arrested for allegedly sending suspicious packages to embassies

Greek vice-consul Georgia Botsiou told SBS Greek radio it had received the package on Friday afternoon.

The 48-year-old man was arrested at his Shepparton home on Wednesday night and charged with sending unsafe articles to be carried by a postal service.

Australian federal police said in a statement that "the circumstances surrounding these incidents are being investigated".

The man has been charged with sending risky articles to be carried by a postal service and is due to appear before Melbourne Magistrate's Court this morning.

Some 38 parcels were sent to consulates and embassies in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney yesterday.

Mr Avan did not apply for bail.

Australian police on Thursday (Jan 10) charged a 49-year-old man for sending as many as 38 suspicious packages containing a hazardous material to embassies and consulates around the country.

He was apprehended last night at his home, with images obtained by 9News showing police in hazmat gear assessing the suspect's home.

The British, American, Croatian, New Zealand and Swiss consulates in Melbourne confirmed to CNN on Wednesday that they had received suspicious items in the mail.

In a statement the AFP and Victoria Police said they believed the substance was sourced from his home in Shepparton.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that a worker from the New Zealand consulate in Melbourne had said the packages in question were envelopes labelled "asbestos".

Police have recovered 29 of the packages and have said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

It came two days after Sydney's Argentinian consulate was partially evacuated following reports of a suspicious substance. The Victoria state police said on January 9 that they believe the incidents are targeted, and that the general public is not at great risk. Officials at the U.S. and Swiss missions in the city said they had also received packages.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs had raised the alarm with all diplomatic missions in Canberra on Tuesday after similar incidents were reported at offices in Sydney and the Australian Capital Territory.
