The film is based on a similarly titled the book by Sanjaya Baru, the former media advisor of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

A Bihar court on Tuesday ordered a first information report to be filed against actors associated with the soon-to-be-released film The Accidental Prime Minister, PTI reported. Some Congress members were noted saying that they will not let the movie release in the country due to the facts while BJP praised the work of the entire Accidental Prime Minister's makers by saying that the movie narrates the tale of a family who ruled the country for 10 years. The court had admitted the case and fixed 8 January to hear the case in the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate court.

The film is scheduled to release on January 11. Actors and actresses who have played the roles of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, then a national general secretary, and Priyanka Vadra have also been named in the petition, alongside the producer and director. The petitioner, Pooja Mahajan, claims that from the trailer it appears that the movie has been made "just to create a different impression in the minds of the people and to brainwash them".
