A new technology has been released today that may turn into a wake up call for many of us who use services like Netflix.

However, UK firm Synamedia is determined to mitigate password sharing with a new service dubbed "Credentials Sharing Insight" that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect behaviour associated with such an action.

If the password is being used within a family, less strict action will be taken, like an email is sent to upgrade the account to premium or so.

But you have to pay a certain price to watch these web series, create an account and get a password.

While Netflix offers the ability to share with others, it is believed that standard is abused and log-in information is being shared with more than makes financial sense for the company.

In fact, the company reported that almost 26 percent of millennials share their Netflix credentials, which it says could add to billions of dollars in losses for streaming services if left unchecked.

The company says that in "extreme" cases, where passwords have been sold online, accounts will simply be delted. The company also cited Parks Associates, which predicted that in 2021, a total of $9.9 billion of pay-TV revenues and $1.2 billion of over-the-top (OTT) revenues will be lost to password sharing.

Streaming services such as Netflix are able to pay for access to Synamedia's initiative that will grant them the data in question.

The system can work out if the service is being used in a "wrong" location - and knows when people are using it in their homes or holiday homes, for example.

It uses behavioral analytics and machine learning to track how many people are logged into a single account, as well as where they log in from. "It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream", says Jean Marc Racine, CPO and GM EMEA of Synamedia.
