CNN's Don Lemon: GOP Emboldened Steve King To Use White Nationalist Rhetoric

Pelosi said Friday. "The new normal around here is to praise white supremacists and nationalism as something that shouldn't be shunned".

It seems insane to think that in 2019, a US congressperson would be extolling the virtues of white supremacy, but here's Rep. Steve King spouting off about white heritage yet again.

For the second time in two days, King insisted that he is an advocate for "Western civilisation, " not white supremacy or white nationalism. King asked in an interview with The New York Times published Thursday.

Scott goes on to remind Rep. King about crimes committed in the name of white supremacy in this country, including when a white supremacist murdered nine African Americans in a church in Charleston, S.C.in 2015, or when a white nationalist ran over a young woman in Charlottesville previous year, and just three months ago when a white supremacist killed two black people in a parking lot in Kentucky. King is quoted as saying in the report.

Iowa may be overwhelmingly white, but it's still embarrassing that the state has elected an unabashed bigot like King to Congress nine times despite a history of these kinds of statements.

"One phrase in that long article has created an unnecessary controversy".

King said he wasn't complaining that he couldn't freely use terms like white supremacist, but rather that he was asking how terms like that got into political discussions.

"I want to make one thing abundantly clear; I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define", King added in a statement.

King met with a far-right party that has historical ties to Nazis on a trip to Austria last October - for which he faced little more than mild criticism from lawmakers in his own party - but this week his comments sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. During his meeting with the website Unzensuriert and members of the anti-immigrant Freedom Party, King held another interview in which he decried that "Western civilization is on the decline".

When people with opinions similar to King's open their mouths, they damage not only the Republican Party and the conservative brand but also our nation as a whole.

Steve King (R-Iowa) in recent years.

In the op-ed, Scott didn't call out King's other racist beliefs.

House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney called the language "abhorrent and racist".

The comments came as part of an extensive report from the newspaper detailing how King's staunch views on immigration that mirror those of President Donald Trump.

"Under any fair political definition, I am simply a nationalist".

Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor and for a short time the frontrunner in the 2016 Republican presidential nomination stakes, said on Twitter Friday that the party should primary King.
