  • Murray Cod Australia says no effect from Darling River fish deaths

Fish kills have been caused by a Low Dissolved Oxygen event associated with the rapid die off of an algal bloom along this section of the river. "They are often the only place with drinking water and so critical for wildlife such as kangaroos, parrots and pigeons".

The town of Menindee "stinks" and there are fears more fish will die as the water quality continues to worsen, local Kate McBride told AAP on Friday.

Dick Arnold and Rob McBride held up two massive fish as they accused the government and cotton growers for the "man made environmental disaster" which they said made them feel like crying.

"It's devastating to see the hundreds of thousands of fish killed earlier this week and we believe this is one of the largest fish kills ever seen", Mr Blair later said in a statement.

Upriver the basin is about 20% full but in the lower Darling River levels are as low as 5%, a spokeswoman for the Murray Darling Basin Authority said. "Without more water available to flow through the system, it is possible more fish will die during summer".

NSW Labor confirmed that it would seek to overturn the plan - supported by all basin state governments and the Morrison government - to effectively decommission the Menindee Lakes System.

"Coupled with the extensive drought and the simple fact there has been little-to-no rain, the release of water from the lakes has exacerbated the conditions leading to these fish deaths". He added the SDL project at Menindee, which aims to save 105 gigalitres a water a year, must proceed.

"On the Barwon-Darling, the impact on cotton production is even more devastating with zero hectares of cotton being grown in Bourke this season, down from 4,000 hectares the year before", the general manager of Cotton Australia, Michael Murray, said. "You would blow up the [Murray-Darling Basin] Plan".

The Board at Murray Cod Australia (ASX:MCA) says their fish stocks have not been affected by the recent fish deaths on the Darling River.

But it is former Green now independent MP Jeremy Buckingham's hilarious reaction during a Facebook video that is drawing all the attention, for the wrong reasons.

That's not to say Murray Cod Australia hasn't experienced its own disastrous codtastrophe.

A video of people holding up the dead fish from the latest incident has gone viral as local farmers and the community blame the state government's mismanagement of the Murray-Darling Basin.

"It should be inconceivable that a $13 billion water reform developed in response to drought has failed at its first drought", she said.
