  • Gartner: Not a very merry Christmas for PC market as chip shortage bites, small biz vanishes

According to the market research company, the Redmond giant had a 3.3% market share in the U.S. in Q4 2018 with 472K PC shipments, down 12.9% year-over-year.

The global PC market returned to its familiar downward slope in the fourth quarter, according to preliminary numbers from market analysts. The demand existed, the market research firm says, only that the said shortage "affected vendors' ability to fulfill demand created by business PC upgrades".

PC makers shipped 68.6 million personal computers in the final quarter of 2018, a decline of 4.3 percent compared with the same period a year earlier, market researcher Gartner reported Thursday.

"Just when demand in the PC market started seeing positive results, a shortage of CPUs (central processing units) created supply chain issues".

In brief: Research firms Gartner and IDC have released figures showing the state of PC sales last year-and it's not good news.

Meghan Markle's half-brother Thomas Markle Jr. is making headlines again, but this time it isn't for their family feud. TMZ stated that the 52-year-old was stopped by police at 1:33 AM in OR and taken into custody for impaired driving.

It's not the largest drop around, but it once again paints a rather lacklustre picture for the PC market, which previous year actually looked like it was picking up a bit after quarters upon quarters of declining shipments.

Also weighing on the market were political and economic uncertainties among small- and midsize businesses. Region-wise, the US saw a small increase in volume from the a year ago, whereas it was all negative in the Europe Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region and the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, saw a single-digit decline - majorly due to the US-China trade war. However, HP that came second on the list with a share of identical 23.4 percent, as of Lenovo, shows a decline of 3.2 percent year-over-year "due to a challenging quarter in the Americas".

Globally, ASUS, Apple, and Acer suffered the greatest declines, as the table below shows, but the only two vendors to manage year-on-year growth were Dell and Lenovo (the latter knocked HP Inc off the number-one spot in Q4 2018). Dell, in contrast, had the strongest year-over-year growth among the top five OEMs with a 1.6 percent increase in quarterly shipments. "Holiday sales are no longer a major factor driving consumer demand for PCs". "The market stabilization in 2018 was attributed to consistent business PC growth, driven by Windows 10 upgrade".

In the US, HP was the top vendor for 4Q18, taking 33.4% market share.
