  • Steven Wright Red Sox avoid arbitration with one-year deal

The Boston Red Sox now have avoided arbitration with three of their pitchers.

The Red Sox announced that Betts avoided arbitration with a one-year, $20 million contract, the most any player received before Friday's 1 p.m. ET deadline when teams and arbitration-eligible players must agree to a deal for the upcoming year or otherwise prepare for an arbitration hearing.

His efforts paid off in a big way, as Betts is now coming darn close to doubling his salary for the upcoming 2019 season.

It was the second-highest figure ever given to a player in year one of arbitration, behind only Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs.

Phil Masinga has passed away, aged 49
Former Leeds United and South Africa striker Phil Masinga has tragically died at the age of just 49, it has been confirmed. In December he was admitted to the Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp with an "undisclosed illness".

Nevertheless, this just goes to show that if the Red Sox hope to keep Betts in Boston for the foreseeable future - as most fans are hoping - they are going to have to break open the bank vault and shower him in dollar signs.

Betts' $20-million salary is a record for a second-year arbitration-eligible player. However, should the two sides fail to agree to a multi-year extension next offseason-Betts's last arbitration-eligible season before reaching free agency-the three-time All-Star could command an astronomical salary in his final year of team control; at the very least, Betts appears poised to eclipse-if not shatter-the $23MM record set by Josh Donaldson one year ago, which now marks the highest one-year arbitration salary ever.

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts is entering his final year of arbitration, as is Brock Holt.

The Globe also reported that Boston reached deals with outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.
