A 16-year-old Australian boy died in an avalanche in St Anton, Austria on Wednesday afternoon.

An Australian family's winter holiday has ended in tragedy after a teenager was killed while skiing in Austria.

Police said the family had left their ski resort at around 4.40 p.m. local time.

The boy was stuck under the snow for 20 minutes and could not be revived once he was pulled free. The second week of January has brought heavy snow to much of continental Europe whilst the United Kingdom remains relatively mild for the time of year.

He was about to enter year 11 at Sydney's International Grammar School. The 16-year-old son was completely buried by the snow masses, " the statement reportedly said.

"We will continue to support the family through the coming days and beyond".

The school has reopened today and will be open next week for any students in need of counselling or support.

Australia's foreign affairs department is providing consular assistance to the teenager's family. In neighboring Slovakia, the mountain rescue service said a Slovak man, 37, died from an avalanche in the Mala Fatra mountains.

A further Six German teenagers are lucky to be alive after emerging from an avalanche that engulfed them at Wildkogel resort in the Salzburg province.

The death toll from severe weather in Europe has risen to at least 17 as heavy snowfall continued to cause problems in Austria and southern Germany.

On Norway's Arctic Svalbard islands, more than 100 people were evacuated as a precaution because of a storm and the risk of avalanches.

Two separate avalanches killed two German skiers in Austria's Vorarlberg mountains.

However, according to the publication, Elisabeth Koestinger, the Austrian minister responsible for tourism, said that "in most skiing areas, there is no reason for concern at present if people keep to the rules and don't leave the secured slopes".
