Gdansk attack: Polish mayor stabbed on stage during major charity event

The mayor of Gdansk in Poland has been stabbed while on stage during a charity event.

Adamowicz, who has served as mayor of Gdańsk since 1998, was re-elected to a sixth term in November.

"Unfortunately we can not yet say that Paweł Adamowicz's condition is stable", Dr Jerzy Karpinski, director of the health department in Gdańsk's regional administration, told Radio Gdańsk on Monday morning.

"He remains in a very, very serious condition, " said Dr Stefaniak.

Karpinski added that Adamowicz was relatively young and healthy, but he had a lost a lot of blood, which was depriving his body of oxygen. People were lining up to give blood in response to appeals by officials.

Video footage showed the attacker bursting onto the podium and launching himself at Pawel Adamowicz, 53, who had been waving sparklers with others on stage at the Sunday evening fundraiser.
