Kooch Leads Putnam by 2 Shots at Waialae

14 January, 2019, 04:14 | Author: Heidi Alvarez

Kuchar had been suffering from a PGA Tour win drought of more than four-and-a-half years until he broke through in November at the Mayakoba Golf Classic for win No. 8.

The only other time Kuchar won twice in the same season was in 2013, when he won the Match Play Championship in Arizona in February and the Memorial in early June.

So odd was this round that Reavie made more eagles than birdies, and the one shot that made him think the ball might go in the hole led to a par.

American Matt Kuchar used a hot start to shoot his second-straight 63 and grab the halfway stage lead on Friday at the PGA Tour's Sony Open by one stroke over Andrew Putnam.

Kuchar was flawless on day three, posting four birdies without dropping a shot, to be the 54-hole leader at 18 under.

Meanwhile, Canadian rookie Adam Svensson, who opened with a 61 to take a first-round lead Thursday, followed with a 74 to fall nine shots behind American Matt Kuchar.

"If you play well, you can make birdies", Kuchar said.

"Last year I probably ground harder than I've done in the past", he said. Jordan Spieth had a short week despite a 66 in second round and missed the cut by one shot. The veteran continued to limit mistakes (he's carded just one bogey in 54 holes and missed only two greens in regulation in Round 3) and turned in a bogey-free, 4-under 66. Those were the only players within five shots of the lead, and all of them are chasing Kuchar.

"I anticipate needing another good round tomorrow", he said. Clearly, the 40-year-old is in a better spot than when he had gone more than three years without winning and was left off the Ryder Cup team for the first time in 10 years.
