Phases of the blood moon photographed by Michael Cerilo in Winnipeg on April 15, 2014. At apogee (the most distant part), the moon is 252,000 miles (405,500 kilometers) away. They occur when the moon passes through a larger but less-distinct area of shadow cast by the Earth, blocking only part of the sun. The event can be enhanced with telescopes or even binoculars, but is thoroughly enjoyable with the naked eye. "But during an eclipse, because the moon is darker, you'll be able to look at the moon in a very different perspective".

Bryn Davis, chairman of the Vectis Astronomical Society, based in Newchurch, said: "The lunar eclipse should be visible from all over the Island during the night of January 20/21". Since January's full moon is also known as the Wolf Moon, that's led some to christen tonight's lunar event a Super Blood Wolf Moon.

"This will be a full blood moon, but it won't be visible from Australia, but it will be visible from the United States and United Kingdom and likely to have an impact on the governments of those countries more so than here", she says.

The rest of the name is all about planetary geometry. Skies will clear Sunday evening, allowing good viewing for the lunar eclipse, dubbed the Super Blood Wolf Moon. This can happen only when the sun, the moon and Earth are perfectly aligned during a full moon, Thanjavur said.

Despite the moon's position in this deep shadow, it won't entirely vanish from Earthlings' sight. Higher frequencies at the blue end of the spectrum get absorbed completely in the atmosphere, but red light can pass through and reach the moon.

He said: "The amount of sunlight that hits the Moon is much reduced, and what sunlight does hit the Moon has to pass through the Earth's atmosphere". "The moon actually goes right through the shadow of the Earth".

"It's like seeing a sunset all the way around the Earth", Hayne told Live Science.

What time is the Blood Moon tonight?

"Surprisingly emotional experience being under totality like that", Sorin said about his photo of The Great American Solar eclipse in 2017.

The show starts subtly at 9:36 p.m. EST (6:36 p.m. PST) with a penumbral eclipse, when the outer edge of Earth's shadow will very slightly darken the moon's face. "It looks like it gets covered up by this curved shadow of our planet".

Are you going to watch the lunar eclipse?

The total lunar eclipse will start at 11:41 pm ET on January 20, which is around 10:11 am on January 21 (Monday) in India.

Because Sunday night's is only the third consecutive full lunar eclipse, and the next eclipse later this year - July 16 - will be only partial, this sequence is not a lunar tetrad. So this year, in fact, the eclipse will begin while the moon is still below our horizon.
