One way Twitter will deal with this steady decline in monthly active users is to simply stop reporting them.

"So, starting this quarter, in addition to sharing the growth in mDAU as we have since 2016, we are disclosing the absolute number of average mDAU (previously referred to as DAU), for both the U.S. and global markets", said Twitter.

Despite the growth in 2018, investors are concerned with Twitter's forecast for the first quarter; the company predicted ad revenue fall to between $715 million and $775 million.

Twitter expects capital expenditure of between $550 million and $600 million in 2019, well above analysts' average estimate of $415 million.

Twitter shares tanked almost 10 percent Thursday after the company warned of weaker-than-expected revenue and said it will stop reporting its closely watched monthly active user metrics.

Twitter's operating costs are expected to surge by 20 percent year on year, a large increase from analysts projections of 12 percent. It has hundreds of millions of daily users and many rely on it to ...

The company said Thursday it had 321 million monthly active users in the final three months of last year, down five million from the prior quarter and nine million from the same period a year ago. Total advertising revenue was up 23% quarter-on-quarter to $791m, with video ads representing more than half of sales.

Twitter's stock fell 8.7 percent, to $31.18 in premarket trading. This time, however, the company has revealed the number of "Monetizable" Daily Active Users, namely those who Twitter can use for targeted advertising.

Twitter's 24 percent year-over-year revenue increase (26 percent on constant currency basis) makes it clear the company is able to show revenue growth despite a declining user base, according to eMarketer Senior Analyst Jasmine Enberg.

Revenue from data licensing and other non-advertising businesses rose 35 percent from a year earlier to $117 million.

The switch to a monetisable daily user count enables Twitter to put a more positive spin on how it's doing, but even there, Twitter gives off the impression that it's trying to paint a slightly rosier picture than reality - at least when it comes to the competition.

Twitter has made its first annual profit in its 13-year history but another fall in the number of its users and a disappointing sales forecast took the gloss off the results and sent its shares down almost 10 per cent.
