  • Theresa May Promises U.K. Lawmakers Brexit Vote by February 27

The UK Labour Party will seek to force British Prime Minister Theresa May into a second House of Commons showdown on her Brexit deal by the end of the month.

May has been seeking changes to the deal with Brussels since it was rejected by a record majority in parliament on January 15.

Last week, the passing of the Brady amendment, which called for "alternative arrangements" to the Irish backstop, paved the way for Theresa May to have another trip to Brussels in an attempt to renegotiate her Brexit deal that suffered a historic defeat in Parliament.

But Downing Street aims to reassure them by promising another vote where they can put forward alternative options, if a new deal has not been struck by 27 February.

Labour's Brexit policy chief Keir Starmer told the Sunday Times newspaper that his party would seek to use the debate in parliament this week to prevent May from waiting until the last minute to come back with a deal, and compel her to present a fresh accord for lawmakers to consider before February 26.

If she hasn't brought a new deal to Parliament by February 27, she'll say there will then be another opportunity to vote, Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said in a BBC interview.

He acknowledged that more work was needed to get the United Kingdom ready for Brexit on March 29, telling the BBC's Andrew Marr Show there are "still steps that are currently being put in place" but "there is steady work that is going on, 10,000 civil servants that are now focused on this" and the Border Force was "ramping up" its staff.

"We can't allow that to happen".

As the clock ticks down to Britain's scheduled exit on March 29, May is trying to persuade the European Union to change a deal that was agreed between London and Brussels late previous year but overwhelmingly rejected by parliament in January. "There needs to be a day when Parliament says "that's it, enough is enough", Sir Keir said.

"We have got to put a hard stop into this running down the clock", Sir Keir told the Sunday Times.

A customs union is one of the demands made for any deal to get Labour support.

The move led to a backlash from pro-EU Labour MPs, but Starmer defended the approach and warned against a split in the party.

She told Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday: "I appreciate Jeremy Corbyn has come to the table but the reality is what he is proposing does not deliver on what we want as a country".

Earlier today, Treasury Chief Secretary Liz Truss refused to rule out quitting if May shifted to a position of backing a customs union in order to get a deal through parliament.
