Riot policemen react to tear gas during a demonstration by the "yellow vests" movement in Paris, France February 9, 2019.

The police source, however, said numbers were higher, with 21,000 demonstrators taking part in rallies outside Paris.

About 200 "yellow vests" demonstrators protested in the western French city of Nantes on Saturday, Feb. 9, for what the movement has dubbed "Act 13" of their weekly demonstrations, which have shaken President Emmanuel Macron's authority.

Paris police confirmed that a demonstrator was injured in the hand and been treated by paramedics, but did not identify the victim.

The serious hand injury was sustained during violent clashes with cops on the streets of Paris today in the 13th consecutive week of demonstrations.

A auto, motorbikes and multiple trash bins were set ablaze as the protest moved toward the city's Invalides monument but France's Interior Ministry said this week's protest was significantly smaller than last week's.

Such vehicles have been a common sight in Paris since deadly extremist attacks in 2015. But the Interior Ministry said the protests are much smaller than last week's.

Police said 31 demonstrators had been arrested in the unrest.

The yellow vest activists, who have brought hundreds of thousands onto the streets over the past three months, are now trying to achieve electoral success but the movement is politically divided and has no appointed leader.
