The latest bid for freedom was made by chimps who used the branch as a makeshift ladder and scaled high walls surrounding their pen on Saturday.
Some incredibly mischievous chimps put on quite a display for visitors at the Belfast Zoo over the weekend by attempting a big break from their enclosure - a daring effort that was captured on video as one managed to get beyond a wall.
Another video shared to Monaghan's page shows one of the animals sauntering across a path following its successful breakout.
The adult chimp, capable of killing a human, emerged from the bushes feet away from the family and walked onto the zoo path.
They were at the zoo with Ms Monaghan's children, Grace (8) and Leo (6), and Mr McFaul's four-year-old nieces, Summer and Willow.
Cairns said it appeared the trees in the enclosure had been weakened by the storm, allowing the chimps to use them to climb out. "I tried not to show fear but inside I was a bit like what happens if it attacks us or tries to take the kids or runs over".
Belfast Zoo said Saturday's incident was a "highly unusual event".
"It may have been a different story if it had been aggressive but it absolutely wasn't. We just walked past it and it was absolutely grand". It made us feel at ease.
Elaine Monaghan's grandchildren were at the zoo at the time.
"We like things to be natural in their enclosure, to have trees in it, but we will review it", he said.
The animals were locked into their inner enclosure after the adventurous ape returned.
The endangered animal was found and returned to the zoo the next day.
