At least nine people, including a child, were killed after a major fire broke out in Hotel Arpit Palace in Delhi's Karol Bagh area in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Seventeen people have died in a fire at a hotel in western New Delhi.

The dead included a woman and a child who had tried to escape by jumping from a fifth-floor window of the 65-room hotel in the shopping district of Karol Bagh.

Indian Twitter user Vikas Tripathi, sharing the video, wrote: "Death toll likely to rise as people jumped off the building to save themselves". Several fire tenders were sent to the spot.Rescue operations continued till late in the morning.

The injured were rushed to three hospitals including the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML).

The hotel comprises a basement, a ground floor and four other floors.

The rescue took about 30 minutes because fire engine ladders could not initially reach his floor, he said.

Those staying in the hotel included a group of tourists from Myanmar, broadcaster NDTV said, adding that the authorities were trying to locate them.

The recuse operation was called off around 9:50 am and cooling process was started. "Many people were still fast asleep at that time", he said.

Delhi's urban development minister Satyendar Jain said authorities appeared to have been negligent in enforcing building laws in the surrounding area.

Delhi health minister Satyendra Kumar Jain has declared the blaze at Hotel Arpit Palace as a case of negligence, saying that the hotel had flouted rules by being allowed to build six floors instead of the six constructed.

"We have to check the stability of the structure, check every room", Deputy Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.
