Jody Wilson-Raybould resigns from cabinet

If then-attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould was informing the prime minister about her policy on the issue, or discussing options, that's fair game apparently.

Wilson-Raybould has hired a former Supreme Court justice to advise her on what she can say publicly about the matter.

The commissioner is limited from saying much else until the examination is complete, but the statement does confirm this is in regards to the allegations in the Globe and Mail that the PMO attempted to pressure the now-former justice minister to cut a deal with SNC-Lavalin in order to drop criminal charges against the company.

Veterans Affairs Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould released a letter Tuesday announcing her resignation.

CTV News has not independently verified the story, and Trudeau has denied it. On Monday, he said in Vancouver that he'd told Wilson-Raybould that any decision on the subject was hers alone.

"Canada's Ethics Commissioner agrees there are sufficient grounds to begin an independent investigation into Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his office for the alleged special treatment they gave SNC-Lavalin", said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. The Quebec company, which offers a range of services across engineering, procurement and construction, is facing bribery and fraud charges. Wilson-Raybould moved to Veterans Affairs.

Arab Coalition denies supplying Yemen militants with United States weapons
According to recent estimates, as many as 85,000 children may have died from hunger since the coalition's intervention. With logistical support from the United States , the coalition has carried out more than 18,000 raids on Yemen.

"I have reason to believe that a possible contravention of section 9 may have occurred", Dion wrote in a letter to NDP MPs Nathan Cullen and Charlie Angus, who filed the complaint.

Earlier: Trudeau said he welcomes inquiry into SNC-Lavalin.

"Justin Trudeau promised Canadians he would change the way politics worked in Ottawa, but instead his Liberal government continues to prioritize helping insiders and the rich get ahead".

On Monday, Wayne Long, a backbench Liberal MP from New Brunswick, broke ranks and joined the Conservatives and New Democrats in calling for the justice committee to investigate the matter.

Her decision follows a week of scrutiny following bombshell allegations of political interference reported by The Globe and Mail.
