Trump to create American AI Initiative with executive order

  • US President Donald Trump ordered the government to give greater priority to artificial intelligence but critics said the executive order lacked key details

"By driving technological breakthroughs in AI, breaking barriers to innovation, preparing our workforce for the jobs of the future, and protecting American advantage in AI, we're ensuring artificial intelligence technologies continue to improve the lives of our people, create jobs, reflect our nation's values and keep Americans safe at home and overseas", the official said.

This initiative, which will elevate federal funding for AI research and support USA -led AI worldwide standards, doesn't contain new AI development funding or additional details on next steps, The Verge reported.

The measure is little more than symbolic.

"AI is something that touches every aspect of people's lives", a senior administration official said on a conference call, recently.

Instead, the White House hopes to provide leadership for private industry to take the initiative in developing artificial intelligence.

Ivanka Trump and Chris Liddell, a former Microsoft chief financial officer who is now a deputy chief of staff to the president, planned to attend the signing ceremony, according to a statement the White House issued in advance.

It also says federal agencies will establish guidance to ensure the new technologies are developed in a safe, trustworthy way.

Research and development: Federal funding agencies will be asked to "prioritize AI investments" in their allocations.

The Hill noted that other USA agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), were rushing to invest in AI that will "improve predictions of hurricanes and severe storms", according to an agency statement obtained by the publication.

Engage internationally: It will call for a strategy for global collaboration that ensures AI is developed in a way that is consistent with American "values and interests".

US efforts to jump-start its AI R&D have stumbled, with the US Department of Defense being reluctant to totally overhaul its legacy systems and US corporations like Google getting cold feet about helping the US state develop weapons of war that make use of artificial intelligence.

Vivek Wadhwa, distinguished fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, discusses how the expansion of artificial intelligence may affect USA employment.

Dubbed the American AI Initiative, the administration will direct agencies to prioritise AI investments in research and development, increase access to federal data and models for that research and prepare workers to adapt to the era of AI. That includes high school, undergraduate and graduate fellowships, alternative education and training programs and other scholarships.
