Airbus chief executive Tom Enders said: "As a result of this decision we have no substantial A380 backlog and hence no basis to sustain production, despite all our sales efforts with other airlines in recent years".

Airbus UK makes the wings for the A380, employing 6,000 staff at its main wings factory at Broughton in Flintshire, as well as 3,000 at Filton, near Bristol, where wings are designed and supported.

Emirates' local rival Etihad of Abu Dhabi also disclosed it was cutting some Airbus and Boeing jet orders, highlighting growing questions over the growth of Gulf airlines.

Emirates salvaged Airbus' A380 production in January of previous year with a firm order for 20 more jets after the future of the superjumbo was in question.

He adds that the A380 will remain an important part of Emirates' fleet "well into the 2030s" and says that the carrier will continue to invest in the onboard product and services of the aircraft type.

Airbus said it would start discussions with partners regarding the "3,000 to 3,500 positions potentially impacted over the next three years".

But while major U.S. airlines including United Continental Holdings (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) have quit buying the 747, Boeing continues to get some orders from UPS, which uses the jumbo jet as a cargo carrier.

The firm said it would stop deliveries in 2021 of the A380, which has been in operation for more than a decade, after Dubai-based carrier Emirates reduced its total order of the model by 39 planes. "We have shown how people can truly fly better on the A380".

Airbus stood by the A380 even after it was slammed by the global financial crisis of 2007, when airlines started having second thoughts about owning huge planes that were profitable only when filled to the brim.

Intermediary cities are growing nearly twice as fast as megacities, according to a 2018 paper posted by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development.bit.ly/2P28F3h That's a boon for twinjets like the Boeing 787 and 777 or Airbus's own A350, which has outsold the A380 three to one.

Emirates long has been the largest operator of the A380. The giant jumbo aircraft, by contrast, suddenly became too expensive, too heavy and too cumbersome to operate.

"This leads to the end of A380 deliveries in 2021".

What was the problem with the A380?

Emirates insists it plays fairly and has called the A380 a "passenger magnet", misunderstood and badly marketed by rivals. The jets will "play an important role in our future fleet and network plans", he said. The double-decker planes started flying in 2008 and seated more than 500 passengers.

The A380 has flown more than half-a-million flights and carried more than 190 million passengers, with more than 300 commercial flights a day.

Why is A380 production ending?

.

Like Concord, the supersonic jetliner that inspired a generation of plane-spotting fans, the A380 was brought back down to earth by the hard truths of commercial board-room economics that gained the upper hand over popular aviation enthusiasm.
