Lufthansa reportedly sued a passenger after he purposely missed a flight

  • Lufthansa lost the first court case against the flyer but is seeking an appeal

The precedent-setting case exposes the travel industry's disdain for the so-called "hidden city" hack- in which passengers book flights with their final destination as a layover point to avoid the higher cost of non-stop flights, CNN reported. However, the wily passenger used all legs of the outbound flight, but opted out of the Frankfurt to Oslo return flight and, instead, flew on an unconnected Lufthansa reservation from Frankfurt to Berlin, Germany.

For example, you might be keen to get from Los Angeles to Houston, but a flight from LA to New Orleans with a connection in Houston happens to be cheaper than a direct flight.

A Lufthansa customer was supposed to fly from Seattle to Frankfurt and then to Oslo - but he failed to show for his Frankfurt to Oslo flight. He booked his flight on April 8, 2016, and traveled early the next month. Now Lufthansa is getting upset at their passengers for using the hidden city reality to save money. From there, he flew to Berlin on a separate Lufthansa ticket. But one passenger has been taken to court by the German airline Lufthansa for doing exactly that. It is now seeking $2,385 in compensation.

Lufthansa is seeking to sue a passenger it claims intentionally missed a leg of their journey in order to secure a cheaper flight, it has been claimed. By contrast, the court said, the airline's method of calculating its initial price is "completely intransparent". But as CNN reports, Lufthansa is still pursuing the case and has confirmed that it will file an appeal.

The site, which was founded by Aktarer Zaman, was sued by both United Airlines and Orbitz.

The case was thrown out in 2015 after the judge in the Northern District Court of IL said the court didn't have jurisdiction over the case because Zaman didn't live or do business in that city. It also skews the market for those final-leg flights, critics say, driving prices up and leaving seats empty.

It's not even remotely illegal, though airlines have written warnings against it into their terms and conditions.
