His answer was not to report the amount of damage done and not break out detailed numbers on iPhone shipments in its quarterly results.

But as per a report from IDC, Apple iPhone sales fell no less than 19.9 percent during the December quarter, with Apple becoming the fourth smartphone brand in China.

It wasn't just Apple that got whacked, though, as China's entire smartphone market shrunk almost 10% in the quarter, lending credence to Apple officials saying that the drop was related to overall conditions in China. For the iPhone, revenue dropped 15 percent to $51.98 billion.

"The imbalance between the increasingly severe domestic market environment and Apple's high product unit price has led to the declines of iPhone shipments in Chinese market", the company as quoted as saying by the SCMP. A slowing economy, lengthening replacement times and the iPhone's hefty price tag contributed to the USA giant's decline, IDC said according to a Bloomberg report said.

As such, Apple's Chinese market share declined from about 13% to 11.5%, year-over-year. But when it comes to India, there have been multiple reports that Apple may start manufacturing more smartphones in the country. To compensate for the loss, Apple is trying to replace phone sales with revenue from services. Apple also didn't seem to work on its Chinese marketing plans -- an area that needs constant updating. Both companies have seen a slump in shipments in China, and have been the worst performing among top five smartphone makers. Its shipments plummeted nearly 35% because of inventory corrections and an internal restructuring, IDC said.

Fifth-ranked Xiaomi, a Chinese name that experienced rapid growth just before its 2018 initial public offering, incurred a 34.9 per cent plunge in shipments due to inventory corrections and an internal restructuring, IDC said.

China's smartphone market does not look bright this year, said Wang Xi, a China analyst at IDC.

IDC said: "5G phones will still comprise only a very small portion of the overall market".

"We've a long way to go before they become mainstream", IDC said.
