"It's putting a new generation at risk for nicotine addiction".

From 2017 to 2018, the frequency of tobacco product use, defined as usage 20 or more days during the past 30 days, also increased by 38.5% among current e-cigarette users in high school, suggesting that e-cigarette users are vaping more often than they have been.

On Feb. 4, organizers from anti-tobacco group NYC Smoke Free traveled with students to the capital on Legislative Education Day, to show their support for more comprehensive tobacco control programs. Frequent use (defined as more than 20 days in the past 30 days) of e-cigarettes rose from 20% in 2017 to 28% previous year among current high school e-cigarette users.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on e-cigarette marketing and sales aimed at teens, but more needs to be done, said Thomas Ylioja, clinical director of health initiatives at National Jewish Health in Denver.

"Unlike tobacco, electronic cigarettes are not regulated, and from what we know nicotine is already addicting and these electronic cigarettes contain more nicotine than cigarettes", said Robinson.

The Democratic-led legislation seeks to close one of the remaining holes in the state's regulatory framework to limit access by minors to tobacco products and smoking devices - including e-cigarettes, or vapes, which heat nicotine-infused oil to create a vapor that is then inhaled; the devices have soared in popularity among teens.

The survey revealed that more than 1 in 4 high school students and about 1 in 14 middle school students used a tobacco product in 2018. "Irrespective of whether its middle or high school, the most common combination is e-cigarettes and cigarettes". Across middle school students past year, any tobacco product use was reported among 9.5% of Hispanics and 6.8% of non-Hispanic blacks, and it dropped to 6.6% of non-Hispanic whites and dropped again to 3.8% of non-Hispanic students of other races.

We do not have a clear idea about the long-term effects of these substances since e-cigarettes have only been in use for 15 years or so.

Vaping began to take off among the young in the 2010s, and overtook cigarette smoking in 2014.

"JUUL entered the US market in 2015 and since December 2017 has held the greatest market share of any e-cigarette in the United States". However, the first independent studies have shown that combustion is taking place and toxic and carcinogenic compounds are released, some in lower levels than in conventional cigarette smoke, others in higher levels. He added that if the trend continues in 2019, tough decisions will have to be made regarding the regulation of e-cigarettes.

The FDA has proposed to allow flavored e-cigarette products to be sold in stores only, not online. The figure dropped to 21.7% of Hispanics and was down to 18.4% of non-Hispanic other race.
