Facebook for Android has received a new update that gives users more control over their privacy settings, notably allowing them to stop the app from tracking their location.

Until now, Android offered a single on/off switch for Location Services for all the apps at the same time, which allowed a user to either enable the location for all apps, or disable, there was no in-between.

Facebook said that every Android user sharing their location information in the app would get a notification telling them about the new feature. Users can maintain location services but disallow background data collection when the app isn't being used.

Facebook introduced a new background location setting on Wednesday. On the bright side of things, the developers of Facebook know that too well and they are making important changes which are going to enable Android users to disable Facebook's ability to track their real-life location. Put differently, it could keep tabs on users' location even when they're not using it, but now there's an option to turn it off.

Now, it's hard to deny the importance of Location settings while using Facebook.

A major ad fraud operation could be sucking your phone of juice and using up more than 10GB of data a month by downloading hidden vids, Oracle has claimed. So if you had them off, they will stay off but if you had them on you can now choose to restrict it to while using the app only.

Conveniently, days after that damning report dropped, Facebook released a new security feature. Facebook has also explicitly said that it would neither collect any new data nor turn any of the related settings on by itself after the new update.

What's a tad ironic about this is that the move comes only shortly after CNBC reported that Facebook had been using location info to search for users it considered to a threat, as well to track missing interns; we had one of those called Jason. he's not been seen since 2016. For people who use Facebook for iOS, nothing is changing.
