For the first time in history, an all-female crew will conduct a spacewalk at the International Space Station, NASA confirmed to CNN.

On March 29, the world will witness two Nasa Astronauts namely Christina Koch and Anne McClain undertake a spectacular spacewalk.

It will be the second of three walks scheduled for Expedition 59's mission. She's due to take part in another spacewalk on March 22, alongside astronaut Nick Hague.

Now, with Canadian aerospace engineer Kristen Faccio operating as the crew's ground support from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, the historic mission will be an appropriate milestone for female trailblazers during the month of March: Women's History Month. "And, of course, assignments and schedules could always change".

"It was not orchestrated to be this way; these spacewalks were originally scheduled to take place in the fall", Stephanie Schierholz wrote in an email. The lead flight director is Mary Lawrence and the lead EVA flight controller is Jackie Kagey.

NASA Flight Controller Kristen Facciol sparked worldwide excitement at the beginning of this month when she tweeted her elation at being assigned to assist the spacewalk from the ground. It is not yet clear what tasks McClain and Koch will be performing during their spacewalk, which is expected to last around seven hours, according to Frazier.

In the almost 60 years of spaceflight, there have only been four times when expeditions included two female members trained for spacewalks.

During spacewalks, astronauts spend an extended period of time on the exterior of the International Space Station. Astronauts also conduct spacewalks to fix satellites or spacecraft that are already in space, instead of having them brought back to Earth to fix.

There have been 213 space walks at the ISS since 1998 for the purposes of maintenance, repairs, testing of new equipment or science experiments, according to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
