A transcript of a letter written by Albert Einstein to his son in 1935, revealed on March 6, 2019 by the Hebrew University.
Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, a pillar of modern science, tried unsuccessfully for decades to prove another concept - that electromagnetism and gravity were different manifestations of a single fundamental field.
Most of the documents constitute handwritten mathematical calculations behind Einstein's scientific writings in the late 1940s.
There are four personal letters between Einstein and his friend Michele Besso and a letter to his son Hans Albert, who lived with Einstein's estranged wife in Switzerland. "Let's just hope we won't have a Europe war first".
Hebrew University said it had received the papers as a donation to its 80,000-item Albert Einstein Archives from a foundation in Chicago after they were purchased from a private collector in North Carolina.
Einstein Archives Hebrew University
Ahead of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Albert Einstein, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem unveiled 110 new documents that once belonged to the physicist.
Einstein expresses concern about the deteriorating situation in Europe and the rise of the Nazi party in Germany: "I read with some apprehension that there is quite a movement in Switzerland, instigated by the German bandits".
Einstein helped establish Hebrew University and was a member of its board of directors. That was a puzzle, "Hanoch Gutfreund, a scientific advisor to the university's Einstein archives, told AFP".
The manuscripts, which have never been published or viewed by the public, offer new insight into the inner workings of Einstein's mathematical mind. "If they would have come down hard a year and a half ago, it would have been better and easier", he wrote.
"Whenever someone came to visit our home, we always showed them our "Einstein Wall" which was full of photos and letters from my grandmother's famous cousin".
"Out here, nobody knows where I am, and I'm believed to be away on a trip", Einstein wrote in the letter.
Einstein's more human side can be seen in the personal letters.
Following the preservation and digitization of these new documents, HU's Einstein Archives is now working with Caltech's Prof.
