Natural Power is hailing the Offshore Wind Sector Deal agreed by the industry and the government as a major step forward which will generate significant economic benefits for the UK.

A new Government deal is set to call time on the dominance of fossil fuels in Britain's power system by the end of the next decade in favour of giant spinning wind turbines.

A total 70 percent of the country's electricity is predicted to be generated from low-carbon sources by 2030.

Benj Sykes, UK country manager for Danish offshore wind power company Ørsted, said: "This relentlessly innovative sector is revitalising parts of the country which have never seen opportunities like this for years, especially coastal communities from Wick in northern Scotland to the Isle of Wight, and from Barrow-in-Furness to the Humber".

Britain will invest 250 million pounds (327.5 million USA dollars) to develop the country's supply chain, with global exports set to increase fivefold to 2.6 billion pounds by 2030, said the release.

The move comes under the new Offshore Wind Sector Deal, a joint commitment by the government and the offshore wind industry to grow the renewables sector and provide clean energy to the country.

The department suggests this would be driven by more than £40 billion of infrastructure investment, which it believes could see the number of jobs in the wind sector triple to 27,000 by 2030.

Keith Anderson, chief executive of ScottishPower, said: "The Sector Deal will attract even more businesses in the United Kingdom to join the offshore wind supply chain, and we are excited to see the transformative impact this will have on our projects".

MHI Vestas vice president Julian Brown said: "Our recent investment on the Isle of Wight is already delivering on the sector deal ambitions, creating almost 400 new highly skilled jobs in 2019, exporting over three quarters of our 2019 output and investing £1m in a four-year skills programme".

The industry will invest £250m in measures including ensuring British companies are competitive and world-leaders in innovation in areas such as robotics and floating wind and larger turbines.

But Greenpeace said that renewables needed to be scaled up even more.

The deal will involve the release of seabed land owned by the Crown Estate, which manages the Queen's property and assets.

"Renewable power now presents the best opportunity for cheaper, cleaner and faster decarbonisation", executive director John Sauven said. This leaves Britain with a big energy gap in the future.

The offshore wind industry has grown almost five-fold since 2011, with 23 gigawatts installed at the end of 2018 and a large volume of planned projects in Europe, China and the United States.

Scottish Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: "Offshore wind has a key role to play in achieving our ambitious energy targets and delivering a low-carbon energy system".
