Hawke's Bay students will join their counterparts from around the country in striking for urgent action on climate change on Friday.

School strikes for the climate are now being planned in more than 80 nations.

This movement is led by Swedish sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg.

"These young people understand the dire threat the Earth is facing, and they are calling for realistic and reasonable responses to the crisis", said MTA Vice President Max Page.

Glasgow City Council has become the latest to confirm that students who miss school to take part in global climate protests will not face punishment.

"And our government refused to listen". But in walking out of school as citizens they are sending a powerful signal to political leaders and "adults" more generally that our continued action and inaction is violating their right to a future.

Local groups including Byron Shire Climate Emergency Guidance Group, Zero Emissions Byron, COREM, Creative Mullumbimy, The Brunswick Valley Historical Society and Mullum SEED issued a statement of support for the students.

She said that it is "kind of sad" that students have to take it upon themselves to push for policy changes "to ensure that our future is protected".

"It is important that normal process is followed if there was an absence on the day for the safety of the students, and to keep families informed of the actions of their children".

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave her support on Wednesday to a youth movement urging government action to tackle climate change ahead of protests by students across the world later this week. In February, she told the Financial Times, "People tell me that they are so hopeful when they see me, and other children 'school-striking, ' and they say, 'Oh the children are going to save us.' But no, we aren't".

"Above all, it is a message that should unsettle us all into action - hope is not enough when the wellbeing and survival of the planet and those who inhabit it are at stake".

"We applaud the strong leadership shown by young people in advocating for a safe and healthy future for everyone". The aim of Climate Leaders is to recruit even more of these kind of candidates - people who can represent young voices and deliver visionary climate policy. "The science has been clear for a really long time, but we've never really faced the issue head on". To Noor, the "we" means youth.
