Hawke's Bay students will join their counterparts from around the country in striking for urgent action on climate change on Friday.

School strikes for the climate are now being planned in more than 80 nations.

This movement is led by Swedish sixteen-year-old Greta Thunberg.

"These young people understand the dire threat the Earth is facing, and they are calling for realistic and reasonable responses to the crisis", said MTA Vice President Max Page.

Glasgow City Council has become the latest to confirm that students who miss school to take part in global climate protests will not face punishment.

"And our government refused to listen". But in walking out of school as citizens they are sending a powerful signal to political leaders and "adults" more generally that our continued action and inaction is violating their right to a future.

Local groups including Byron Shire Climate Emergency Guidance Group, Zero Emissions Byron, COREM, Creative Mullumbimy, The Brunswick Valley Historical Society and Mullum SEED issued a statement of support for the students.
