  • Gambino Crime Family Boss Frank 'Franky Boy' Cali Shot Dead Outside His Staten Island Home

Cali, 53, was fatally shot multiple times to his torso shortly after 9 p.m. (0100 GMT on Thursday) in front of his home, police said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, an NYPD official told HuffPost.

No arrests have been made at this time.

He was charged in a massive 80-count racketeering indictment involving 62 alleged mob bosses, underlings and associates of the Gambino, Bonanno and Genovese crime families.

Cali was believed to have been elevated to the position of acting boss in 2015, taking over from Domenico "Greaseball" Cefalu.

He had just one criminal conviction: an extortion charge in 2008 for an attempted shake down of a trucker working at a proposed NASCAR race track in Staten Island.

The Gambinos" rise to become one of the most powerful mafia families in America started in 1957, when the family's namesake, Carlos Gambino - an Italian immigrant - orchestrated the murder of Albert Anastasia, who had organized a collection of Italian gangs into what now would be considered a "crime family'.

An alleged mafia boss has been reportedly been shot and killed outside his home in NY.

The last mob boss to be shot to death in New York City was Paul Castellano, who was killed outside of Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan in 1985.

John Gotti, who organised the hit, then took power at the helm of the Gambino family.

The shooting wasn't the only recent mob assassination in NY.

According to a 2008 Advance report, Cali - who also went by "Franky Boy", - was born in Brooklyn and married into the Inzerillo family of Palermo and cultivated close ties with members of the Siderno cartel in Italy.

The Gambino criminal organisation is one of the "Five Families" of organised crime in NY, alongside the Bonanno, Colombo, Genovese and Lucchese families.
