After news of the documentary broke, Gerry and Kate released a lengthy statement hitting out at the series.

Netflix's new documentary series is set to set the record straight about that exactly happened to Madeleine on the night of her disappearance.

Gerry and Kate McCann have slammed the show - claiming it could "hinder" the police investigation into the missing person's case - and refused to be interviewed.

Despite numerous offers from the filmmakers, Kate and Gerry declined to take part in the documentary, with their former spokesperson insisting: "We want nothing to do with it".

In the doc, which was directed by Chris Smith (who was also at the helm for Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened and Jim & Andy), Gamble says: "I absolutely believe that in my lifetime we will find out what has happened to Madeleine McCann".

Madeleine, 3, went missing while she and her family were on holiday in Portugal in 2007 and the United Kingdom investigation into what happened to her remains open.

Facebook, Instagram outage goes global
Facebook is experiencing the worst outage in its history, with essential services left unusable for global users. Facebook had to take to another social media site, Twitter , to try and reassure users.

A source inside the production team added: "We would have welcomed the opportunity of working with the McCanns directly but they informed us they couldn't and wouldn't consider taking part while a police investigation is into their daughter's abduction is ongoing".

The McCanns were dining at a hotel in Portugal when Madeleine went missing from their hotel room where she and two older siblings were sleeping. Her disappearance sparked a huge investigation involving Portuguese police and Scotland Yard, which is still pursuing leads.

The documentary comes out on Friday 15 March, so for all those true-crime fans, it will definitely be one to mark in your diaries.

According to The Sun, the documentary will focus on the human trafficking explanation, claiming Madeleine was taken to be sold. And still to this day, the whereabouts of Madeleine remain unknown.

Netflix commissioned the programme in 2017. There is no release date yet for the show in New Zealand as yet, although Netflix originals usually are released worldwide on the service at the same time.
